According to Animal Freedom, the alleged violations "reveal the systemic failure of competent authorities... raising concerns whether the Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia is able to control fur farming."
It is claimed the footage was shot at five separate fur farms in Latvia and features sick and injured animals who have not received veterinary care, cramped cages, lack of drinking water, unsanitary conditions, and the keeping of dead and live animals in the same cages.
The footage also features the display of GPS devices and dated newspapers in an effort to prove the time and place at which the footage was shot.
"The footage proves that the situation in fur farms has not changed since the first investigation was published in the beginning of 2013, even though the Food and Veterinary Service had promised to carry out additional inspections regarding animal welfare in fur farms," a statement by Animal Freedom said.
"There are many violations of the law and they have been documented in several fur farms, so there is no reason to believe that these are only accidental errors of individual inspections. There is a systematic lack of controlling measures," said Aivars Andersons, the chairman of Animal Freedom.
"We think that the competent institutions have let the public down. The controlling measures have to be improved immediately, and animal protection organisations need authorization for carrying out their own inspections of fur farms."
LSM has asked the Food and Veterinary Service for a response to the allegations.
