Upwellings in the Gulf of Riga have caused water temperature readings at Mersrags to dip down from +17.3⁰ to just 7.4⁰ degrees C, reports the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre Monday.
Only the day before yesterday on the Mersrags beach the water stood at +20⁰, but coastal winds pushed the warm water levels offshore, leaving the cold waters to rush up from the depths.
Cool waters were measured in Ventspils too – at +12⁰, but elsewhere on Latvia’s coasts temperatures were between +15⁰ and +20⁰, with the warmest level noted at Ainazi.
Lake and river waters are warmer – between +18⁰ and +22⁰ degrees, with rises in warmth of one to two degrees in the afternoons and evenings.
Swimmers should keep in mind the dreadful drowning statistics released last week by the authorities and remember to enter cold waters cautiously and under constant supervision.
Mērsragā apvelinga procesa dēļ, ūdens temperatūra pēdējo 12 stundu laikā samazinājusies no +17,3 līdz +7,4 grādiem.
