Previous sightings of the first storks of the season have not come before the date of March 6 (2002, Auce) and March 9 (2007, Aizkraukle).
The weather this week will however not get rapidly warmer despite the arrival of early signs of spring and gradually warming temperatures last week, say extended meteorological forecasts.
The weather throughout the land’s western and central regions Monday began overcast, cold and wet, with occasional rain extending east across to the provinces of Vidzeme and Latgale by afternoon. Moderate south-southeast winds were expected to prevail with high temperatures reaching between +3 and +7 degrees Celsius.
By Tuesday a newly active cyclone is expected to hit the Baltic sea not far from Latvia’s coasts, bringing rain and snow mixes to the shores of western Kurzeme late Monday already, stretching across the rest of the land overnight. Only Latgale will see less of the frequent precipitation in the mixed form of rain and snow throughout most of Latvia Tuesday. Winds will grow in strength to 12-17 meters per second, reaching between 20-23 meters per second on the coasts. Low overnight temperatures will be around zero up to +5 degrees.
On Wednesday the winds will have died down but precipitation along the same lines will continue. Nighttime lows will dip below zero between -2 and +3 degrees, daytime highs reaching +2 to +6 degrees.
No significant change in the weather pattern is expected for Thursday through the weekend, except for a reduction in the amount of moisture coming from the skies and slightly lower temperatures, prompting renewed concerns for difficult icy road conditions overnight.
On Sunday winds will grow stronger again, bringing heavier precipitation back to the forecast, with high temperatures reaching between +5 and +10 degrees.
