Heavy, wet snow hits Latvia

Take note – story published 9 years ago

A broad band of moisture reached Latvia Thursday, bringing snow to southern Kurzeme and Zemgale provinces already early in the morning, and reaching Riga and the rest of the country before midnight into Friday. Authorities have confirmed that treacherous icy patches are already developing on the nation’s road system, warning drivers to plan extra time for their commutes and exercise extreme caution at the wheel.

Precipitation is forecast under heavy cloud cover for the entire land, with the strongest snowfalls overnight to Friday and early in the morning expected for the east of Zemgale province, the Riga surroundings and western Vidzeme province, with accumulations up to between 5 and 10 centimeters.

While parts of Kurzeme and the far eastern areas of Vidzeme and Latgale provinces will see less snow, the expected freezing drizzle will cause roads to ice up dangerously.

Lows overnight will be between -4 and +1 degrees Celsius.

Friday will remain cloudy with snowfall continuing throughout the land, but especially so in the central regions.

Daytime highs will vary from -2 degrees in Vidzeme’s far northeast, while coastal Kurzeme will climb up to +5 degrees, with slow winds from the east southeast prevailing throughout.

Under heavy snow conditions visibility on the roads will be severely limited at times.

Riga is expected to see snow lasting throughout the night and into Friday, with temperatures hovering around zero, between -1 and +1 degrees.
