Latvia wants to jog your memory

Take note – story published 7 years ago

If you see someone running in a bizarre, mazy manner in the park or schlepping through the city, crossing streets at apparently random points, don't worry - they are probably just celebrating Latvia's centenary.

For the Latvian Institute, the official body promoting Latvia's image abroad, has come up with a new idea which it has named "Jog Latvia In The World".

In essence this involves following a route that approximates the outlines of Latvia's borders, though on a greatly reduced scale. Obviously, the significance of this route will be lost on observers until you provide satellite-like imagery to prove that your meandering path was not the result of drink or delirium, but Baltic patriotism.

The Latvian Institute describes the scheme thus:

In preparation for Latvia’s centenary (LV100), the Latvian Institute is joining together with the VSK Noskrien runner society to invite every Latvian and every friend of Latvia to take part in a patriotic sport: jog Latvia in the world! You can jog, you can walk, you can ride a bike or even swim. Just mark out your route on your favourite sports app and use the hashtag #izskrienLatviju. Use one of our premade routes or put together your own one. Share it with friends, family members and neighbours. Let’s all jog Latvia in the world together!

The joggers have helpfully prepared suggested routes for several major cities around the world, though of course you are also welcome to pore over a map and devise your own local Latvia.

A film has also been prepared to explain the concept and the hashtag #IzskreinLatviju (Jog Latvia) should keep you abreast of others' efforts. Happy jogging!
