California and Florida also have large numbers of Latvians, says the report.
While metro areas with the largest number of Latvians are New York (about 9,031), Chicago (4,926), and Los Angeles (3,660).
The report uses 2010-2014 data and points out that the figures are estimates about people who have self-identified “Latvian” either by first ancestry (44%) or second ancestry (56%). Many of them might not speak Latvian.
An interesting factoid pointed out is that Lithuanians outnumber Latvians in the US by 8:1.
"The largest place with more Latvians (230) than Lithuanians (166) is Lincoln, Nebraska. Should a dispute arise over the veracity of these two statistics there is an Estonian Honorary Consul in Lincoln that would be happy to mediate," says the report, penned by Siim Sööt, Honorary Vice Consul for Estonia, and Dace Ķezbers, Vice President of the Chicago Latvian Association.
Here's a graphic by one Ilze Garoza illustrating these fascinating facts about the Latvian-American diaspora.
