Space running out to keep illegal migrants

The state Border Guard service announced Thursday that there is an impending lack of accommodations for keeping illegal migrants detained by the service inside Latvian territory and that it was necessary to soon seek a solution for where else to put them.

According to Border Guard spokesperson Kristīne Pētersone, along with the closing of the accommodations center for detained foreigners in Olaine, the sole remaining facility in Daugavpils was rapidly approaching full capacity.

She told newswire BNS that while the ‘Daugavpils’ center was well-equipped and able to handle up to 84 persons, there were already 80 illegal migrants living there now. In light of the number of persons detained at the border in just the past two weeks, the Border Guard has already begun thinking about where to find additional space for them in a timely fashion.

Pētersone said that in the first three-and-a-half months of this year already 49 Vietnamese migrants have tried to cross the border illegally, only to be detained thanks to the professionalism and vigilance of Border Guard officers.
