Appearing on Latvian Television Wednesday, Mūrniece said that taking into account that Lithuania has reintroduced conscription, Latvia should renew discussion about a similar move and evaluate the associated costs.
As interest in contributing to the defense of the state is growing, "we should perhaps at least look in this direction" she said.
Mūrniece also praised Latvia's initiative to introduce non-compulsory military training for university students starting next year.
Latvia is the only Baltic state that has no compulsory military service. Lithuania reintroduced conscription last year responding to the perceived Russian threat.
