Riga's population soars 6,000 on year

According to the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs, the population of Riga grew by 5,947 people last year, bouncing back over the 700,000 threshold, reported LETA.

On January 1 last year the official population of Riga was 698,529 registered residents, but on January 1, 2017 it reached 704,476 residents.

The most populous Riga neighborhood is the Latgale district - 185,884 residents. While the Center district is the least populous with just 25,115.

Riga is the only city in Latvia where a population increase was registered last year.

The Central Statistical Bureau estimates there were about 1.97 million people living in Latvia in 2016.
