Public service media in the spotlight

The future shape of public media in the Baltic states and the wider Baltic region is being debated April 26 and 27 in Riga.

Titled Maximising Public Value: A Future for Public Service Media, the event will act as a talking shop for various interested persons and bodies, with LSM's own Russian-language editor Alexander Krasnitsky among the participants.

According to the organizers:

The forum will bring together high ranking public service professionals, experts, media executives and decision makers. Among others, Ole Mølgaard, Senior Media advisor, board member of Swedish Radio, Boris Bergant, former vice-president of the EBU and Per Anne Kalbakk, ombudsman from the Norwegian PUblic Broadcaster NRK. They will discuss the challenges and threats for strong, competitive public service media in the region, including regulatory, political and financial pressures, as well as the necessity for rapid changes to strengthen the competitiveness in the digital age. Also the forum will discuss the policies of the public broadcasters in the region regarding ethnic minorities and media accountability.

The event is hosted by hosted by Latvian Television and Latvian Radio (with both of whom LSM is affiliated) and organised by the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence in cooperation with ERR in Estonia and LRT in Lithuania, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Danish Cultural Institute.
