While the Prosecutor General’s Office did not include any names in its statement saying charges have been brought against a state official and a private individual, information acquired by Latvian Television makes it is safe to say that the people in question are Magonis and Ossinovski.
The case involves a transaction in which the Latvian Railways subsidiary LDz Ritosa Sastava Serviss bought four old locomotives for several million euros from Ossinovski’s company Skinest.
Ossinovski is accused of having paid the bribe to win the tender, while Magonis is charged with accepting the bribe.
Last week the Latvian Corruption Prevention Bureau said it had asked the Prosecutor General's Office to prosecute Magonis for accepting a bribe of roughly €500,000 and charges have probably been also brought against Estonian railway businessman Oleg Ossinovski.
Ossinovski denies any corrupt practices in the sale of the locomotives.
