President Vejonis to leave intensive care

After spending more than two weeks in the hospital, on Friday the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis was deemed healthy enough to be transferred away from the intensive care unit, according to an announcement by the President's Chancery.

Tests have concluded that the President's condition has improved to the extent that he no longer has to remain in intensive care. Vejonis will be transferred to the cardio surgery ward of the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital, according to the announcement.

Vejonis is gradually resuming his presidential duties. On Friday he signed an order for granting a grade of service to 22 officers who served the time necessary to receive the rank at the National Armed Forces, according to an announcement by the presidential press service.

On January 20 Vējonis was operated on due to a sepsis infection in one of his heart valves, which was replaced with an artificial one. He has been recovering since.

The nation has been very sympathetic to the president's disease, with get well wishes pouring out on social media.

On February 2 the president's YouTube channel released a video with a clearly emotional Vejonis thanking the people of Latvia for their ongoing support. In the video, he also revealed he has an inherited heart condition.

On Friday Latvia's First Lady Iveta Vējone on Latvian Television thanked the doctors and the general population for their support, which came as a "great surprise" both to her and her husband.
