A renovated annex to the Asylum Seekers' Center at Mucenieki was opened on Friday. It cost €1.8m to build and offers housing to asylum seekers and facilities for locals.
It will be able to host about 200 people and will offer them better conditions, including the ability to be separated based on their religion and family needs.
Part of the center will be available to locals, featuring a gym, library, compute room, spaces for children, as well as showers and washing machines.
"The center is made for the residents of the parish. Of course if our current neighbors will come inside, no one will drive them away," said the center's concierge Māra Priede.
"I think locals have learned to live with them, and they with us," Ilze, a local, told LTV.
About 150 people currently reside in the old center. Latvia has to relocate 256 people under the EU resettlement plan, but there are only six months left to fulfill the quota.
A further two blocks of the asylum center for detained foreign nationals are to be finished in April.
