An abandoned rocket base in Galgauska in the eastern Latvian municipality of Gulbene that once housed four nuclear missiles at a depth of 32 meters will be dismantled within six months. This is the last Soviet-era missile facility to be demolished in Latvia, the contracted company told the press on February 6.

The buildings will be dismantled and ground into concrete chips. The Demontaza.lv company says the project, worth close to €200,000, will take it six months to complete.

The base, code-named Dvina R12, is one of the five underground nuclear missile launch facilities, of which there were twelve in Latvia, said Mārtiņš Mālnieks, head of Demontaza.lv.

"In principle, it's a grandiose ten-story building underground, separated into several levels and built from very durable concrete," said Mālnieks.
