Latvia ranks second behind Estonia in the EU in terms of HIV infections per 100,000 inhabitants. New cases are on the rise with 13% more infected in 2015 than in 2014.

A total of 393 new HIV cases were registered in Latvia in 2015, with data by the Latvian Infectology Center saying there were about 6,000 people infected with HIV - including 671 with AIDS - in the country.

However it's estimated that the real number of infected could be twice as high.

Ruta Kaupe, the head of the Dia+logs association, said Thursday at an HIV awareness event that prejudice towards HIV patients actually contributes to the spread of the disease.

According to Kaupe, people suffering from the virus are afraid to tell about their problems as it causes problems in the workplace, as well as isolation and rejection by the society.

Doctors have repeatedly pointed to problems concerning HIV treatment in Latvia.
