The world celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities Wednesday, however Latvia lags seriously behind other countries in easing access to the job market, for instance, as a discussion at Saeima concluded Wednesday on the issue of employment of socially marginalized groups.

At the close of the discussion hosted at parliament, Gunta Anča, a representative of the non-governmental organization Sustento, dedicated to advocacy for equal-access rights and other disabled persons’ interests said:

“We’re talking a lot these days about education. But it’s hard to talk about employment at a time when there’s a lack of good education. It’s obvious we need to come up with new ways to make education more inclusive, both at school and at college and university.”

December 3 is the UN and World Health Organization’s (WHO) promotional effort on behalf of the estimated one billion people worldwide living with a disability. This year the theme “Sustainable Development: The promise of technology” brings attention to one of the aspects that is “key to help realize the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities”.

Despite some promising signs of improvement in some localities, generally Latvia earns very low marks for having an equal-access public environment for disabled persons.
