Most refugees leave Latvia

Since April, more than half of the people who've been legally recognized as refugees have left Latvia, the Red Cross told Latvian Television Wednesday.

The Red Cross explains their leaving with a false impression over the quality of life in Latvia.

Latvia's Red Cross has worked with 63 people who've arrived to Latvia under the EU relocation scheme or crossed the border illegally. According to the organization, the biggest problem is finding them a job.

"Employers are very forthcoming – we have a large list of employers offering jobs," said Uldis Līkops, head of Latvia's Red Cross. However so far only two refugees have been hired officially, both as interpreters.

The Red Cross says so few can find jobs because of insufficient language proficiency, differences in work culture and the desire to retain the status they had in their home country.

"Their professions are very diverse – there are teachers, doctors, many entrepreneurs. Maybe that's what hinders them to start from scratch," said mentor Raimonda Jākobsone.

However mentors are able to find a place to live for everyone who's been granted a refugee status, while children from these families have been sent to school or are waiting in line for kindergarten. "And when all of this has been achieved, it's often the case that a month passes and [they say] 'Goodbye!'," said Jākobsone.

According to Red Cross data, 45 people have been legally recognized as refugees, but only 20 have remained in Latvia.

"They were flabbergasted that not all EU countries are a like, that Latvia is not so rich. They didn't know that before or hadn't been told that before, even though we always tell them when we meet them - that Latvia is different," said Līkops.

Latvia has agreed to admit 531 refugees from Italy and Greece over two years under the EU relocation scheme.

thank god

Thank good they leave this beautiful country. We already have locals originally from foreign country saying that there are more Muslims visible in Latvia now then in past years. People are starting to worry. I want to be safe better than rich. Let Germans and the french live rich and take in terrorists and live in constant stress and fear. they can afford it

Long live Latvia!

Why are Latvians so afraid?

It's really amazing to see how terrified you are of the, what, 100 Muslims living in Latvia. At the same time, xenophobe extraordinaire Janis Garisons wants to stop a UN campaign for solidarity with victims of war claiming that "unlike Syrians and nationals of other war-torn countries, Latvians have the right will to defend the country and will stay and fight." Considering this irrational fear of immigrants, at the first sign of trouble and violence from a hostile nation, many Latvians will shit their pants and run crying for the nearest ferry. Also, it doesn't even require violence to turn Latvians into refugees, an economic crisis turned out to be enough.

Mmm

That's not really true, plenty of people grossly misinterpreted facts about what happened to suit their opinion, unfortunately even LSM, which usually is pretty decent, mistranslated so severly and left out key facts that it appears they may have agenda as well. The campaign unfortunately played into other political issues like emigration (for some smartasses somehow economy = war) and the potential Russian threat perhaps even more than it acctualy made people think about refugee crisis. And most likely because of that Ministry of Defense started complaining that the slogan is demoralizing, what most people left out is that they also said that they are NOT against having campaign supporting refugees, they just wished it had different slogan and would focus on it being a humanitarian cause
