The investigation was launched last summer by the State Police (VP) based on findings totaling more than 2400 pages about possible violations of work safety regulations at the supermarket owned by the company which employed the woman. The total amount in compensations applied for by the victims and their families is €5.745 million.
While not going into any greater detail, VP Criminal Police Board Chief Andrejs Grišins told the press that the woman was responsible for coordinating observation of work safety rules at the company and because they were not observed, grave consequences ensued.
On April 16-17 the prosecution announced the launching of criminal cases against eight persons declared as suspects in the roof-collapse disaster of November 21, 2013, which killed 54 and injured dozens.
Meanwhile, the Saeima Committee probing the Zolitūde disaster and the response to it heard testimony from the Emergency Medical Services Monday, however not without incident, as deputy Artuss Kaimiņš (Regional Alliance) provoked a shouting match with NMPD deputy head Renāte Pupele, accusing her of outright theft of government procurement monies for a new fleet of emergency response vehicles.
On his part, Committee chair Ringolds Balodis said that the work of the parliamentary probe would be complete by September, when it plans to issue a comprehensive report on its findings.
