Latvia's population could shrink by more than 15 percent by 2050, according to the World Population Prospects 2015 revised report by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the UN.

The report predicts that Latvia's population could shrink to 1.593 mln by 2050, and to 1.278 mln by 2100. There are currently about 1.971 mln people in Latvia.

Adding to the demographic woes, there are currently only 85 males in Latvia for every 100 females.

Latvia also holds the dubious honor of being the 2nd fastest-shrinking country in the world (World Bank data).
