The Security Police (DP) have confirmed to national information agency LETA and television channel TV3 news program Nekā personīga that a Muslim from Latvia has become involved in the armed conflict against the regime of Syrian president Bashar Al Assad.

Nekā personīga reported also that other individuals were identified who had shown interest in joining the conflict.

The DP explained that the person in question is from Latvia and practices the Muslim faith.

However the DP declined to specify any further details as to the person’s ethnicity or which armed group they may have joined or how long they may have already been in Syria.

At the end of November the DP stated that no ties between any resident of Latvia and the Islamic State armed movement had been noted, however some individuals had expressed support for its promoted ideology.

The DP also recalled its request for legislative amendments to the Criminal Law to make participation in a foreign armed conflict a criminal offense, regardless of its nature it is a threat to Latvia’s national security as well as European security interests, raising the risks for terrorism and violence in the future.
