Latvia to bring in students' military training next year

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Latvia could in 2017 introduce military training at universities, either integrating it into study programs or offering non-compulsory military training courses, reported Latvian Radio Sunday.

The Defense Ministry hopes that the move would increase the number of reserve officers badly needed by National Guard.

The courses could become available next year, Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis told Latvian Radio.

A work group has been set up at the Defense Ministry to work out the plan. Among possible solutions being discussed are non-compulsory courses held throughout the year or the introduction of military elements into some study programs.

Latvia is the only Baltic country that has not reinstituted conscription in response to the perceived Russian threat.
