Take note – story published 7 years ago

On Sunday Latvia marked 25 years since independence was restored and the shackles of Soviet occupation were thrown off.

"25 years ago it seemed unbelievable that we could be a member of the EU and NATO.

Today together with other countries in these organizations we're deciding on the joint future of Europe and contributing to shaping safety in the world," said Vējonis at a speech on Sunday by the Freedom Monument.

He thanked the countries that supported Latvia on its way to independence, singling out neighboring Lithuania and Estonia, as well as the Scandinavian countries – Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Sweden.

On August 21, 1991, the Latvian Supreme Council passed the constitutional bill on the status of the Republic of Latvia, restoring Latvia's de facto independence from the disintegrating Soviet Union.
