Minors - people less than 18 years old - will no longer be able to buy energy drinks as the Saeima on Thursday adopted amendments to Energy drink circulation law, reported LSM's Latvian-language service.

Energy drinks that contain more than 150 mg of caffeine per liter as well as one or more stimulants like taurine and guarana will no longer be allowed to be sold to minors.

Furthermore, from June 1, when the amendments come into force, energy drink adverts will be banned in media that caters to minors. Energy drinks will have to be placed away from food products in stores, together with notifications that discourage children, pregnant and nursing women from using the drinks.

Drink manufacturers have protested against the amendment, saying they will consider turning against Latvia in EU's Court of Justice.
