A citizen of Russia has been sentenced to four months and 15 days in jail for himself illegally crossing the border and for the illegal transporting of people across the Latvian border, BNS learned from the State Border Guard.

The court ordered the Russian citizen to serve a jail sentence, after which he will be banished from Latvia and banned from traveling here for four years.

In September 2014 the man was convicted of human trafficking involving the transporting of twelve Vietnamese illegal immigrants from Belarus into Latvia across the River Daugava that separates the two countries where one Vietnamese man tragically drowned during the illegal operation.

The Latvian National Border Guard has begun eighteen criminal proceedings regarding the illegal transportation of people across the Latvian border in 2014 compared to just three criminal proceedings in 2013.
