Ambassador to the United Kingdom Andris Teikmanis extended the official overture to Greste, released and deported last month by Egypt after spending more than a year in Cairo’s Tora Prison with colleagues Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy, who were also released on bail but still await a retrial there.
Ambassador Teikmanis also informed Greste that he has been nominated by the Latvian Journalists Association for UNESCO’s Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2015.
At the meeting Greste shared some of his experiences in captivity and how he finally got out as a free man. The reporter thanked the efforts of both the Latvian and Australian diplomats that worked official state channels in Egypt for securing his release.
