Greens MP wants to tell refugees how miserable it is in Latvia

Saeima MP and the head of the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) faction Augusts Brigmanis, appearing on Latvian Television's Rīta Panorāma on Wednesday, said that refugees need to be have a "very clear picture of our [Latvian] lives" prior to arriving, which for the MP seems to mean small benefits, cold and unemployment.

According to Brigmanis, refugees should be told that "Here in Latvia 70% of people don't want to see you," and that they should be informed that their benefits will be "that and that many times lower than in Germany."

Refugees should also be told about how it's much colder in Latvia than in Germany, Italy and elsewhere, he said.

He added that the refugees should be told that Latvian people themselves "leave because they don't have anywhere to work."

Refugees should be asked, "Do you really want to go to a country like this?"

Such a downbeat assessment of the country would give a "very truthful depiction of our lives," Brigmanis claimed.

However, refugees shouldn't be mistreated if they choose to arrive despite the harshness of life in Latvia, he implied.

"If an individual has arrived here, we cannot treat him like..." the veteran politician said before losing the will even to finish his own sentence.

ZZS is the second-largest party in Latvia's three-party ruling coalition.
