General Breedlove: new brigade will be 'ready to fight'

Take note – story published 8 years ago

NATO's senior commander in Europe said in Riga Thursday that reinforcements due to arrive in the Baltic states in a year's time would be "prepared to fight and win if we have to".

Talking to the press after talks with senior military commanders from around the Baltic Sea including Latvia's General Raimonds Graube, Breedlove said the addition of a fully-equipped and combat ready armored brigade would greatly enhance the alliance's firepower in the region.

“To the east and north we face a resurgent and aggressive Russia and as we have continued to witness these last two years Russia continues to seek to extend its influence on its periphery and beyond,” Breedlove said.

“We are prepared to fight and win if we have to... our focus will expand from assurance to deterrence, including measures that vastly improve our overall readiness,” Breedlove stated.

He also expressed hopes that other NATO members would send bigger contingents to the region in response to the US announcement of more troops made on Wednesday.

“When we led by having our aircraft arrive in the Baltic nations 18 to 20 hours after being alerted, other nations have increased the Baltic air policing postures. So when we lead we hope and look for other nations to follow," Breedlove said.

He also went into some detail explaining exactly how the new brigade would operate, as you can hear in the comments below.
