The Rīga-Liepāja flights starting in May aren't intended to compete with the existing bus routes, says airBaltic. The company aims to offer routes to Liepāja from other countries, offering Liepāja passengers easier connections to Rīga from where they can fly to destinations like London and elsewhere, airBaltic told Latvian Radio.

Tickets are already on sale and the airport hopes that these flights will continue in the long term, said Agris Sprūde, head of the Liepāja Airport.

The airport has undergone EU certification and aims to work profitably, unlike ten years ago when it offered flights to Rīga, Moscow, Copenhagen and Hamburg.

"A better connection for Liepāja with 60 destinations and CIS countries cannot be imagined. The timetable provides for doing what no one else can - so that we can bring a tourist from Barcelona to Liepāja, or a businessman from Copenhagen to Liepāja via Rīga," said airBaltic representative Jānis Vanags.

The cheapest tickets to Rīga start at €15 while the most expensive will set you back €99.

The first flights to Liepāja Airport start on May 16.

Passengers from Liepāja will be able to fly to their preferred European destinations within a few hours, instead of having to drive to the Rīga International Airport.

Prior to the rebuild, the Liepāja Airport served around 45 thousand passengers a year.
