Half of the detained persons had been using fake travel documents: passports, ID cards, visas and residence permits of various EU member states.
Of these persons, 90% were citizens of third countries who had been traveling on counterfeit documents to get into the Schengen Area.
Seven citizens of Belarus, three citizens of Lithuania, a Russian citizen, a Chinese citizen, a Polish citizen, a German citizen, as well as an Uzbek citizen were detained for using counterfeit motor vehicle documents: driver’s licenses, registration certificates, road worthiness certificates and other documents.
The Border Guard also published statistics over the number of forged documents detected on Latvia's borders.
A total 149 forged documents were discovered at the Latvian border in 2016, as opposed to 175 in 2015 and 224 in 2013.
