Family flies to be with Peter Greste for birthday

As jailed Latvian-Australian journalist Peter Greste’s family arrived in Egypt to be with him on his 49th birthday, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Gerald Thomson, Australia’s Ambassador to Latvia (based in Stockholm) to discuss his case in light of Greste's dual citizenship, the Ministry reported Friday.

Both sides committed firmly to keep up the strongest efforts for securing his release from Egypt’s Tora Prison, where he and and his two colleagues from the Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera’s English-language team in Egypt have been sitting almost a year since their original detention last December and subsequent trial in June.

The men are awaiting an Egyptian court’s appeal date on New Year’s day a month from now with signs from President Al-Sisi that he is looking for some possible executive elbow room to perhaps decree their deportations.

Rinkēvičs briefed the Australian Ambassador of Latvia’s efforts to bring Greste’s case before the attention of the EU High Representative of Foreign Affairs and the EU Delegation in Cairo.
