Emergency zone encroaches on Riga suburbs

The African swine fever (ASF) state-of-emergency territory was extended by the government again Tuesday to include altogether seventeen new districts heretofore unaffected.

This means that the regions under declared alerts and prevention measures enforced by state veterinary health authorities have now crawled right up to Riga’s municipal borders and the Vidzeme coast.

In addition, the term for the state-of-emergency will not expire on October 1 as originally provided, but was extended to last until January 1, 2015.

In light of ongoing confirmations of ASF infections among wild boar specimens from the woods as well as new cases among domestic pigs, the Cabinet of Ministers ruled to broaden the monitoring and quarantine zones brought into effect by the state-of-emergency to include the entire central heartland districts of Aizkraukle, Ikšķile, Inčukalns, Ķegums, Krimulda, Lielvārde, Līgatne, Limbaži, Mālpils, Nereta, Pārgauja, Ropaži, Salacgrīva, Sēja, Sigulda, Skrīveri, Vecumnieki, Ogre and Jaunjelgava.

A number of these districts in fact make up a chain of Riga’s suburbanized quasi-rural communities along the Daugava and Pleskava highways.
