Dombrovskis urges Ukraine to continue reform

Ukraine is implementing reforms too slowly. Accordingly, financial aid for Ukraine has been slowed as well, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis told Latvian Television Monday.

"The financing of Ukraine - by the IMF, and likewise by the EC - depends on several conditions. The fulfillment of these conditions is of course being monitored. At the moment it's seeing delays," said Dombrovskis.

The second payment for Ukraine within the EU funding framework - initially scheduled for late 2015 - was postponed, with Ukraine receiving criticism from the IMF.

"Christine Lagarde even publicly warned Ukraine not to stray away from the path of reform, as otherwise the IMF program could be cut," Dombrovskis told LTV.

He admitted that Ukraine still has high corruption risks and measures should be taken to reduce them.

"Comparing the situation of today with that of a year ago or last summer, we are seeing some problems. We know there are differences within the Ukrainian government over how the reforms should be implemented.

However it's important that the country retains the intention of pushing these reforms through," he said.

The EC has accepted to grant €1.8 billion to Ukraine in financial aid. The first payment of €600m was made last summer.
