China's Alibaba wants to use Rīga Airport as transit point

The Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group is interested in shipping its goods to Northern Europe using Latvia as a transit point, Latvian Investment and Development Agency representatives said at a meeting of Latvian Ports, Transit and Logistics Council Wednesday, reported LETA.

Contrary to earlier reports that Alibaba was planning to invest in Lithuania and Estonia, the company has informed the Investment and Development Agency that it has no interest in investing in logistics centers in the Baltic region, and is only considering using the Riga Airport as a transit point for shipments.

The Investment and Development Agency began to work with Alibaba in 2015 and originally offered the Chinese company to set up a distribution center in the airport's territory. The agency is currently working with the airport on special tariffs to be offered to Alibaba.

The Investment and Development Agency was working on a total of 21 transport and logistics investment projects last year, while this year there are 11.
