Latvian national airline airBaltic said Tuesday it was diverting a flight to Brussels after reports of two explosions at an airport in the Belgian capital. March 22 flights from Rīga to Brussels and vice versa have been cancelled, as are most flights on March 23.

"Aviation company airBaltic announced that the March 22 flight BT601 from Riga to Brussels has been diverted to Liege airport due to the emergency situation at Brussels airport."

The flight departed Riga at 0705 Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning media reported two explosions at Brussels Zaventem airport which are believed to have caused considerable loss of life.

Soon afterwards, reports suggested a third explosion at a metro station.

Travellers to Brussels from Riga should be prepared for delays and diversions with flights BT603 Rīga–Brussels (1635), and BT604 Brussels–Rīga (1905) on March 22 being cancelled.

March 23 flights BT601 (0750), BT602 Brussels–Rīga (0955) are also cancelled, with info about the BT603 Rīga–Brussels (1635) flight on March 23 to be posted later.

Passengers with tickets to the cancelled flights should call +371 67280422.

Civil Aviation Agency head Māris Gorodcovs told LSM.lv that preventive measures are being taken at the Rīga Airport in connection to the Brussels blasts, with the measures perhaps being strengthened in the latter half of the day. At the moment the airport is working as usual with no changes for passengers, except for the cancelled flights.

Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis was quick to condemn what are assumed to be terrorist attacks.
