On Thursday the first bullets were fired on Latvia's border this year as the Border Guard shot a fleeing people smuggler in the leg. The Russian citizen was leading ten Vietnamese across the border and tried to flee upon being discovered, the Border Guard told the press Friday.

The incident took place in the Alūksne region close to the border between Latvia and Russia.

Upon finding evidence of the border being crossed illegally, the Border Guard went on the lookout and detained ten Vietnamese citizens crossing the border.

The Russian citizen leading them across the border actively resisted arrest and tried fleeing. The Border Guard shot him in the leg after firing several warning rounds.

He was given first aid and taken to the hospital where it was established that hospitalization is not necessary.

A criminal action has been launched against the detainees for illegally crossing the state border in a group, as well as for resisting law enforcement officers.

This was the first time in 2016 that border guards used a firearm to detain a trespasser.

This year, 283 illegal immigrants and 36 traffickers have been detained for illegally crossing the green border.
