Boar herd roams graveyard

Rīga Mayor Nils Ušakovs posted the latest photograph documenting another sighting of wild boar inside city limits Monday, this time an entire herd, complete with piglets, digging up the ground around the graves in the Šmerlis cemetery.

In his post the mayor suggests that "probably we will have to catch all of them and take them away into the woods outside of Rīga."

This is what happened last week when two adult specimens made their way all the way to the canals of Old Town and Freedom Monument square before being caught by police and vets near the central train station and released outside the town of Ķekava.

The city council has established a hunting council to begin considering options for containing the nuisance, which residents of Riga's outlying wooded neighborhoods have grown increasingly concerned as the number of sightings has recently increased.
