Big out-of-date goods scam uncovered

Take note – story published 8 years ago

After carrying out an inspection at a "Lindes" warehouse run by the limited liability company "Vollers-Riga" in Salaspils County, the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) discovered large scale relabeling of German-made frozen products, owned by LLC "Margotta", according to FVS representative Ilze Meistere.

The FVS established 30 tons of frozen products, including ice-cream and frozen pastries.

At the moment, the service is dealing with sorting the goods, however, a majority of them are already expired, while some of the products date back to 2014. The service also found several products with relabeled expiry dates.

The FSV discovered the warehouse after receiving a complaint from a consumer who had purchased an expired ice-cream from a portable ice-cream vending cart. According to FSV, the said frozen products have not entered circulation at other trade or vending places.

An administrative case has been launched. However the maximum penalty that can be applied under Latvian law - a fine of just €700 - makes it clear why such scams come with little risk attached.
