Benefits for large families and single-parent families will be increased next year, the government agreed September 20.

As of January 1 next year, benefits for the fourth and subsequent children in a family will be €50.07 per month, up from  €34.14 now.

The State Social Insurance Agency will be given three months' grace to change its information systems accordingly, so payment of the increased benefits, including for the first several months next year, will begin by May 1, 2017.

Also, from April 1 next year, benefits for single-parent families will be raised to €92.50 (€106.72 for children with disabilities) per child up to seven years old, and €111 for children older than seven.

At the moment, the benefit for single-parent families is €62 a month, while for children with disabilities - €69.37.

Increasing family benefits for large families will require €3.5 million annually from 2017 to 2019, and increasing benefits for single-parent families - €4 million a year from 2017 to 2019.

These decisions are yet to be endorsed by Saeima along with other bills accompanying the 2017 state budget.
