The Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) has set to work out improved combat rations for the forces of Latvia's National Armed Forces, the university said Thursday.

Scientists are to improve the field rations of Latvian soldiers within the next few years, by introducing more products and a new packaging, as well as by lengthening the shelf life of the products.

The rations will have to be made suitable for use in different climates and during a variety of combat missions.

"We have previously cooperated with the Armed Forces and developed rations that soldiers have been using since 2011. In this research the emphasis will be placed on enlarging the assortment of products," said LLU researcher Sandra Muižniece – Brasava.

"Scientists will work with local food producers to ensure that, as much as is possible, the contents of dry rations would be made up of food from locally grown sources," she said.
