About €70m from the €97m required for the project could be received from EU funds by 2023, with the Riga Municipality would co-funding the remainder, the Transport Ministry told the press Friday.
The project of the new 3.65 km-long line also includes a reconstruction of three kilometers of existing line plus the purchase of twelve low-floor trams.
Other projects announced by the ministry include opening a new tram route in Daugavpils, as well as purchasing new trams in Liepāja.
Skanste is a business neighborhood in Rīga. It's also home to the capacious ice hockey, basketball and concert space Arena Riga.
