Latvia on Wednesday welcomed the arrival of new NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg on his first day in the job and praised the work of his predecessor Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Norway's Jens Stoltenberg will be the 13th Secretary General of NATO since the establishment of the Alliance in 1948.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said: "Latvia congratulates the new NATO Secretary General on taking office. I am certain that when led by Secretary General Stoltenberg, NATO will further enhance collective security in view, among other aspects, of Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Thus NATO will remain the guarantor of transatlantic stability, security and freedom".

He also had words of warm praise for his predecessor.

The Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said: "Anders Fogh Rasmussen took the helm of NATO in difficult times when next to all member countries in the Alliance were experiencing  economic problems, that led to decreases in defense funding... The challenges currently faced by NATO have not decreased. I greatly appreciate Rasmussen's efforts towards the strengthening of our democratic alliance and promoting security of the allied countries."
