Chairman Nils Ušakovs of the social-democratic Harmony Center Party (SC) has been visiting Washington DC all week. On Thursday the party chief and mayor of Riga met with State Department officials for talks on the current political situation regarding the Russian-speaking minority and aspects of its integration into civic society, SC faction spokesperson Katrīna Iljinska told news portal apollo.lv.

Iljinska said the talks went into detail about other issues as well, including human rights with respect to national and ethnic language minorities, further development of NATO financing, the crisis in Ukraine and the EU, and how the US should respond to the current Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

The discussions also touched upon the EU-US trade agreement talks.

The SC press secretary stressed that Ušakovs is in Washington strictly in his official capacity as leader of the political party rather than as of the municipal government. The program and financing for his official visit is being coordinated by the party, she said. The visit was planned on the basis of a mutual initiative.

“The US is our important ally and partner. Consultations between Latvia’s largest party and our friends from the US happen regularly, both in Riga as well as on trips like this one to America,” Ušakovs stated.

On Wednesday Ušakovs tweeted from the State Department front desk, where he gave a receptionist his US-Latvian flag-badge as a souvenir to add to her collection.
