US lawmakers pay a visit

A group of US politicians paid a visit to Latvia April 9, offering security support and the chance to buy natural gas.

The eight-strong, all-male US Congressional Delegation from the House of Representatives Committees on Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Energy and Commerce included Congressmen Bill Shuster, Blake Farenthold, Sam Graves, Adam Kinzinger, Mark Sandford, Albio Sires, Randy Weber, and Garrett Graves.

A release from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the delegation had met with Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs and "offered unflagging political support for Latvia’s security," without quoting them directly.

The meeting shared views on transatlantic relations, the strategic partnership between Latvia and the U.S. in security and defence, and cooperation on transport and energy.

"The offer to build cooperation between U.S. and Latvian ports and make use of the US potential for the export of liquefied natural gas came as a message special significance to Latvia," the release from the ministry said.

As part of their stay, the delegation also visited the Ādaži military base and took part in a round table discussion on transport issues.
