The United Kingdom will remain a reliable NATO member following the Brexit referendum, Colley told Latvian lawmakers.
Colley said he wanted to make it absolutely clear that Great Britain would continue to fulfill its NATO commitments concerning the security of Latvia and the region and that this will be reaffirmed at the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw.
He also offered comment on the hate speech directed against Latvians and nationals of other EU countries following the referendum, reported Latvian Radio.
"I feel personally ashamed and angry," Colley said, claiming that all the UK's largest political parties have condemned such behavior.
Colley said that PM David Cameron had said on Monday in no uncertain terms that the UK will not accept such behavior. Colley said that the UK is a polite country and that EU nationals have contributed significantly to the UK's economy and society.
While Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said that the Embassy of Latvia has not received complaints about discrimination, but he did allow that certain tensions do exist.
