Kristaps Klauss, Executive Director of the Latvian Timber Industry Federation, who also ran for the tender for the Revenue Service’s head, has withdrawn his candidacy, reported LETA Wednesday.

Klauss told LETA that he sees his further career in the forestry sector. Asked about the reason he still applied for the position, Klauss said that it had been a socially responsible act that had given him an opportunity to explain to the commission his vision about the future work of the Revenue Service.

He said earlier that he had applied for the tender because he is proud of his country. He also said he was aware other candidates would be stronger than him.

The public Latvian Television (LTV) reported on Tuesday evening that the four candidates shortlisted for the third round in the competition for the top position at the State Revenue Service are Andris Nikitins, Kaspars Rumba, Kristaps Klauss and Ilze Cirule.

Nikitins is the deputy head of the Financial Stability Department at the Bank of Latvia, Rumba is a tax planning expert from Deloitte Latvia audit company, while Cirule has worked at Balta and Gjensidige Baltija insurance companies and Klauss is Executive Director of the Latvian Timber Industry Federation.

As reported, a total of nineteen candidates applied for the vacant post of the Revenue Service's head, and eight of them were selected for the second round, and four candidates were shortlisted for the third round.

The previous competition for the Revenue Service's director general failed as the commission decided that none of the candidates was eligible for the third round. Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola then offered the job to the State Environmental Service's Director General Inga Kolegova, who accepted the offer but later withdrew her candidacy after the Revenue Service found that she had failed to provide full and accurate information about large transactions in her declaration of assets and income.
