Bill to halt residency permits to Russians rejected again

Saeima rejected the right-wing National Alliance (NA) bill to stop the issuance of residency permits to citizens of Russia Thursday.

This was the second week in a row the NA tried to push the proposal through parliament, this time garnering extra votes in favor from some Unity members, however insufficient for keeping the bill alive in the Saeima agenda.

According to Unity faction leader Dzintars Zaķis, amendments recently entered into effect which seem to have already stopped real estate transactions linked to residency permit eligibility.

“The law hasn’t had a chance to prove the efficacy of the amendments yet. In my view, it’s slightly disrespecting towards one’s own work to adopt amendments just two weeks after the previous ones without waiting to see how they will work,” he said.

“As far as I know the (real estate) sector has just about come to a standstill, with no transactions based on the recently-passed amendments. If the NA’s goal was to stop the issue of residency permits to Russian citizens, then it looks like they have achieved this already,” said the ruling coalition party’s faction leader.
