A statement released by his office said: "President Andris Berzins supports the joint Unity, Greens and Farmers Union and National Alliance readiness to assume the formation of the next government and to recommend the jointly agreed candidate Laimdota Straujuma for the Prime Minister's office."
However, the backing does not yet constitute an official nomination of Straujuma, the Presidential press service told LSM.
"The state president calls on the parties as soon as possible to agree on the basic tasks of the new government, as well as its composition, with priority given to ministerial candidates' professional experience in the areas that will be vitally important for Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2015," the statement said.
Talks between Berzins and the parties will continue next week.
