Poll sets the scene for October election

Take note – story published 9 years ago

An opinion poll released Wednesday suggests the race for seats in October 4 parliamentary elections could be a lot more interesting than some people have been assuming.

The poll carried out in September by the respected SKDS pollster suggested that the 100 seats of the Latvian parliament or Saeima would be distributed more widely than expected with two new parties joining the legislature.

If accurate the leading party would be Unity with 28 seats, followed by Harmony on 24, the Greens and Farmers Alliance on 19 and the National Alliance on 14.

The predicted two new arrivals would be Latvia from the Heart with a haul of 10 seats and Latvia's Regional Alliance with 5 seats - though the poll also suggested that the Regional Alliance would be very close to the 5% threshold needed to win parliamentary seats.

In the event that it does not cross the 5% barrier, each of the other parties would gain one seat.
