Latvia merits passing mention in latest thing

Take note – story published 7 years ago

According to some dude no-one knows, Latvia's government includes many traitors and dupes.

That's the assertion of an anonymous report about which social media is currently exercising itself, chiefly because it involves other more colorful yet equally unverified claims involving laundry bills allegedly run up by Donald Trump.

The 35 page compilation of rumor and unattributed "sources" written in the style of a due diligence report says "ethnic Russians employed by neighbouring governments e.g. Latvia" are involved in Russia's cyber warfare efforts, singling out the country for special mention.

"Hundreds of agents" have been recruited by the FSB, successor to the KGB, by choice, coercion, or for financial inducements the document says, again mentioning Latvia in particular but providing neither names nor evidence.

The document was published online by the BuzzFeed portal, which explained: "BuzzFeed News reporters in the US and Europe have been investigating various alleged facts in the dossier but have not verified or falsified them."

Verifying the facts would be good, but falsifying the facts would not.

Predictably, social media have bent themselves out of shape about the whole thing, chiefly because of allegations of bed-wetting in high places.

The weight of social media comment is the only reason we mention the report at all, as otherwise someone would probably ask why we were ignoring it.
