The Latvian Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemned the killing of British aid worker David Haines in Iraq - the latest foreigner to fall victim to Islamic State rebels.

In a statement the ministry said it "strongly condemns the act of terror committed by the jihadist group, ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) -  a brutal murder of a British aid worker, David Haines, kidnapped by the ISIL in Syria in 2013."

"This is the third killing perpetrated by this jihadist group which has already brutally killed two United States reporters. In this manner, the ISIL seeks vengeance against the US, the UK and other international partners in Iraq. The Latvian Foreign Ministry categorically condemns terrorism and any deliberate violence against non-combatants," the statement said, adding that it supports the efforts of international partners to stabilize the security situation in Iraq.

On 13 September ISIL released a video showing the execution of aid worker Haines. Previous videos showing the execution of two US journalists.
